Rough Cuts and Hiding From Lightning!

Encountering Lightning Storms on Sailing Adventures

Barefoot Travels takes us on an exhilarating journey through the Caribbean as they face a fierce lightning storm during their sea passage. The crew navigates their way to safety amidst stormy weather, finding refuge in French Wells. This detailed narration will take you along for the sights, experiences, challenges, preparations, and tips learned while enjoying beautiful islands of the Bahamas.

A Brief Break From Making Videos

Last time we left you, we were in the Ragged Islands at Flamingo Key, it was definitely a beautiful spot. After leaving Georgetown, you may have noticed that we’ve taken a short break from making videos. Sometimes you just need a break to enjoy the surroundings that you’re in. But now we’re back, so I hope you enjoy this week’s episode As We Carry On Through The Bahamas to some other beautiful islands.

Navigating Stormy Weather and Finding Anchorage

The crew decides on French Wells as their destination due to its reputation for providing protection from cold fronts. Barefoot Travels has visited this location before, albeit under less favorable conditions. The area is known for having excellent holding on the bottom and is situated outside of the current, offering some degree of security when faced with challenging weather conditions.

Capturing Rainwater During a Storm

The crew prepares for the incoming storm by setting up a water catchment system using a 20-gallon container and bladder, hoping to collect some much-needed rainwater. This makeshift system helps supplement their limited water supply after their water maker malfunctions.

Weathering the Storm

The night proves to be a tense one as the crew battles fierce winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning strikes. The boat sways gently in its anchorage, proving to be a far more comfortable experience than being out on the open water. The following morning reveals a calmer sea with beautiful sunrise reflections – a clear testament to their safe passage through the storm.

Moving On From French Wells

With the storm passed, Barefoot Travels decides to head towards Albert town, approximately 6 miles away. This old settlement was wiped out by a hurricane years ago and now houses only four residents. The crew plans to explore the area, hoping for good lobstering and fishing conditions.

The Beauty of Sailing Adventures

Sailing with Barefoot Travels allows you to experience the thrill of adventure while discovering hidden gems in beautiful island locations. Through encounters with rough sea passages and navigating stormy weather, you’ll learn valuable lessons on how to prepare for any challenge that comes your way.

Conclusion

In this episode of Barefoot Travels, we witnessed a brave crew battling through a lightning storm and finding shelter in French Wells. The challenges faced only added to the overall allure and excitement of their journey, making it an unforgettable experience for all involved. Stay tuned as they continue exploring the breathtaking beauty of the Caribbean islands.

Location Information

  • French Wells: Located in the Crooked Island area, this is one of the best places for shelter during a cold front.

During your own sailing adventure through the Caribbean or Bahamas, always be prepared for unexpected weather changes and keep an eye on potential lightning storms. Understanding your vessel’s limitations, having the right equipment on board, and knowing where to seek shelter can greatly improve your chances of staying safe during severe weather conditions.

Tips for Safe Passage

  • Monitor weather forecasts and adjust plans accordingly
  • Avoid sailing during thunderstorms or severe weather conditions
  • Safety first: Ensure your vessel is seaworthy, with all necessary safety equipment on board

Remember, it’s not just about reaching the destination; it’s also about the journey and the memories made along the way. Stay prepared, be flexible, and enjoy the ride!

In this weeks episode we continue our journey south. It feels like in The Bahamas you constantly have to be checking the weather and hiding from a storm on the horizon.
