Sailing the Thousand-Mile Inside Passage to Alaska | A Journey Like No Other

Allison and James embarked on an extraordinary adventure sailing a remarkable 1,000 miles along the Inside Passage route to reach Alaska in episode 3 of season 4. Their journey was nothing short of incredible, as they encountered challenging conditions, breathtaking natural beauty, and fascinating wildlife throughout their awe-inspiring voyage.

Embarking on a Thousand-Mile Adventure

Their expedition began with excitement, setting sail from Seattle to the remote corners of Southeast Alaska, covering over 1,000 miles through a waterway that weaves along the mountainous Pacific Northwest coast. The Inside Passage route has been utilized by seafarers for millennia, offering a largely protected pathway against the harsh Pacific swells.

With vast experience in sailing and marine documentation, Allison & James took their followers on an educational journey as well. They discussed the intricacies of navigation, weather patterns, and the rich maritime history of the Inside Passage that is dotted with thousands of shipwrecks from the 18th century.

The Route North: Challenges and Revelations

While initially leaving the protected waters behind, Allison & James soon encountered rough conditions out in the open. They dealt with a day filled with rowdy winds and seasickness before finding their way back into the sheltered beauty of the Inside Passage.

Navigating through channels and deciding whether to take more exposed or safer passages became crucial at times, with Milbank Sound known for its treacherous open ocean swells. They chose the popular and scenic Reed Passage, despite requiring motorsailing as much of the route is well-protected but may necessitate longer periods of motor-boating.

The duo made strategic decisions based on weather forecasts and tidal currents to optimize their progress northward, often using their navigation skills and understanding of marine environments to their advantage. They managed their resources, from fuel to provisions, knowing that the next chance for resupply could be weeks away.

Natural Marvels Along the Way

The Inside Passage did not disappoint in terms of natural wonders. As they sailed through, they encountered spectacular scenery – forests, mountains, and wildlife unlike anywhere else on earth. This includes their exciting sighting of a mother bear and her two cubs foraging along the rocky coastline in the Great Bear Rainforest area.

Delicious Catch and Sustaining the Voyage

Diverse experiences were woven into their adventure, including successful fishing endeavors where they caught black seabass which turned out to be very tasty. The fish was prepared in a delicious seafood chowder featuring some canned salmon and clams.

A Nautical Misadventure: Jellyfish Mishap

Amidst these delightful moments, Allison had an unexpected encounter with marine life when he inadvertently sucked up a jellyfish into the boat’s head system. The tentacled visitor unfortunately met its end but not before creating a bit of maritime humor.

A Much-needed Rest and Warmth

Recognizing the importance of staying dry and warm, they found sanctuary at Jackson Narrows anchorage where they dropped anchor to recharge and let their soaked gear dry out near the cozy warmth of the new diesel stove.

Pursuit of Bishop Bay Hot Springs

Their quest continued towards Princess Royal Channel with a hopeful wind for smoother sailing. The ultimate goal was reaching the sought-after destination – the Bishop Bay hot springs where they planned to relax in soothing baths after braving the cold and wet conditions of their voyage so far.

Conclusion

Allison & James’ epic adventure along the Inside Passage showcases not only the incredible beauty of Alaska but also highlights the resilience, planning, and enjoyment required when undertaking such an ambitious sailing journey. This remarkable voyage is sure to inspire future adventurers and provide valuable insights into navigating these stunning yet challenging waters.
