Lithium Powered Solar SAILING MACHINE! Installing Lithium Batteries Sailing to Alaska | A&J Sailing
June 29, 2024 by Allison & James | Language: EN Play Time: 00:17:32 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

Lithium powered solar sailing machines have revolutionized the world of boating, and for Allison & James of A&J Sailing, this innovative technology has taken their adventures to new heights. Their incredible journey from Vancouver Island to Southeast Alaska showcases just how powerful these setups can be.
Installing Lithium Batteries in a Sailboat
In their quest to update their boat, they needed an electrical overhaul. They were dealing with an old and tangled mess of wires behind the panels that posed a serious hazard and a high risk of fire.
<!– wp:quote ->This was just an electrical fire waiting to happen. It looked like a spaghetti mess, there was so much wire tucked in here!/wp:quote –>
The Safety and Efficiency of Lithium Ion Phosphate Batteries
Now that’s behind them, they’ve opted for the safest type of lithium-ion battery – the lithium iron phosphate. These batteries have been proven to be incredibly safe with no recorded fires in their history.
These new 200 amp batteries offer superior advantages over lead-acid ones, such as allowing users to utilize a larger percentage of their full capacity and having more energy density than lead acid. This makes them incredibly appealing for sailboats looking to save on weight while maintaining power.
Sailing with Lithium Batteries
The journey from Vancouver Island to Southeast Alaska proved the durability and efficiency of their new lithium-ion batteries. They’ve sailed through challenging weather conditions, including heavy winds and swell, without any issues.
<!– wp:quote ->We have so much more power now that we don’t really think about our power consumption anymore./wp:quote –>
Considerations When Converting to Lithium Batteries
For those considering converting their sailboats to lithium batteries, there are several important factors to consider. First and foremost, ensure your DC system meets the necessary safety standards set by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) to prevent any potential fire hazards.
<!– wp:quote ->While there’s been no fires from lithium batteries themselves, lots of fires happen from incorrectly installed electrical systems on boats./wp:quote –>--></p<!– /w<!– wp:p][CDATA[raph–]]></w

They also have an internal BMS (battery management system) that controls each battery cell’s charge levels.
][CDATA[ ]The Journey to Southeast Alaska
</wIn this episode of A&J Sailing, we see Allison and James make it to their destination – Petersburg, a town known as the ‘Little Norway of Alaska’. After sailing 600 nautical miles, they can attest to the durability of these batteries and share some valuable insights on installing lithium batteries on your sailboat.[/CD[wATAG>]!—–>[/<!– wp:/—<]heading —])–>!– /wp:paragraph –>Exploring far reaching fjords & remote anchorages of the Inside Passage charting a course North to Alaska (slowly), we're a Canadian Aussie duo documenting an adventure-based alternative life off-grid on a small 'no-frills' sailboat, Uintah!
