Drag Anchor Night in Horseshoe Bay
As night fell on the beautiful but windy Horseshoe Bay, I was glad to be settling down into my anchorage, knowing that come morning, I would be making the short hop over to Magnetic Island.
Sailing under the stars, with a gentle breeze in my sails, always brings me peace and a sense of accomplishment. The wayward wind provided a bit more challenge than I’d bargained for though as I settled in for what I expected to be an uneventful evening. But life on the water is rarely dull!
Tension Builds During the Night
With my neighbors close by, every bounce of our boats against each other added stress and anxiety about dragging anchor. My boat and I are small – the last thing I needed was to scrape along the seabed or become entangled with another vessel.
I spent much of the night timing my boat’s movement relative to its GPS position, closely monitoring how deep we were in relation to the surrounding sandbars as the tide shifted. Every time our boat bounced against a wave, I’d take more measurements. It was like a maritime game of Tetris: I had to ensure that at no point did my vessel breach the shallows without me knowing it and risk stranding us.
Around midnight when conditions seemed slightly calmer – or rather, less violent – I made the decision to get some sleep. I put everything on a tight schedule; after all, even during difficult circumstances like this, I have work and plans waiting for me in Magnetic Island’s waters by daybreak.
Anchor Up and Set Sail For Magnetic Island
The following morning, as first light filtered through the palm trees surrounding Horseshoe Bay, my neighbor vessels nearby raised anchor and made their escape from our tumultuous night. Following suit, I assessed conditions before pulling up mine. This operation required steady hands and constant adjustments; each time my boat would bounce against waves or currents, so too would the anchor. The chain pulled taut on my windlass, causing strain as it loosened its grip below.
Inch by inch, meter by meter, I raised my anchor until finally victory was mine! It broke free from seabed and rose gracefully toward the surface. As relieved as I was to be rid of this anchorage dilemma, the excitement wasn’t over yet. With a boat full of anxious anticipation (and perhaps some trepidation), we weighed anchor and prepared for our sail towards Magnetic Island’s shores.
The Voyage to Magnetic Island
Safely navigating out of Horseshoe Bay proved another obstacle as we had only a minimal breeze in our favor. We drifted and bobbed along at the mercy of changing tides while carefully timing engine startups to conserve fuel where possible.
Once outside the protective lee of the bay, winds kicked up sufficiently for my small vessel, and we were off towards Magnetic Island – about 8 nautical miles away according to GPS. This is another one of Australia’s hidden gems; lush with wildlife and offering great hiking trails, Magnetic Island offers respite from the sometimes intense mainland atmosphere.
Exploring Nelly Bay
In order to properly provision myself after a week on board alone, I needed to head into Nelly Bay. With no car aboard this time, I took advantage of their local bus system that shuttled me through charming neighborhoods to larger grocery stores where supplies were abundant.
The area has its quirks too; Magnetic Island boasts cyclone preparations and even a marine animal hotline for those concerned about sea life in distress. Afterward, I grabbed an early bite at the onsite snack bar before catching the ferry back home.
Adventures Await
Magnetic Island was truly special; it is already ingrained in my memory, awaiting more exploratory adventures and discoveries as time permits. This beautiful haven served not only as sanctuary during these uncertain waters but also filled me with endless inspiration for future sailing expeditions ahead.
Next stop, deeper into the Australian bush! Join me as I search for something truly unique – an expedition worth its weight in gold and experiences never to be forgotten.

Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
