Surviving Dengue Fever On A Sailboat! [And How I Made It WORSE!]

Sailing through the warm waters of the Caribbean, Adventureman Dan finds himself engulfed in a battle against the most intense fever he has ever experienced – Dengue Fever. After five and a half years traveling alone across the globe, this adventure turns out to be one of his greatest challenges.

What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever, also known as ‘breakbone fever,’ is an illness caused by a mosquito bite carrying the virus. The severity of the fever varies from mild to life-threatening. It predominantly occurs in tropical areas and is often underreported to protect tourism.

Warning Signs

The symptoms can be as mild as a high fever, headache, muscle or joint pain, and nausea. But when it progresses into the severe form of Dengue, expect abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, gums bleeding, fatigue, and restlessness.

Prevention is Key

The simplest way to avoid Dengue fever is by not getting bitten by mosquitoes. This can be done through wearing protective clothing, using repellents, and even installing mosquito nets.

How Adventureman Dan Got Sick

Dan started feeling Shivers on June 11th. He thought it was just a flu coming on but continued with his daily activities. His condition worsened over the following days, and despite trying various medications, his symptoms continued to escalate.

The Descent into Crisis

As the fever reached its peak, Dan’s health deteriorated dramatically. He was near death from dehydration and required immediate hospitalization on June 16th. He received IV treatment and medical care, including monitoring of his platelet count which was dangerously low due to Dengue fever.

The Road to Recovery

Though he left the hospital against doctor’s advice on June 17th, Dan remained in critical condition. His body endured several days of severe illness, during which time he felt weak, experienced headaches, and battled strange dreams.

The recovery process has taken more than two weeks since the worst of his symptoms were in control. It will take at least a few months for Dan to regain his full physical and mental capacity. However, he remains undeterred by this setback.

It truly is terrible! This video details what it is, my day by day struggle, how I made things worse, what I wish I'd known, and some final acknowledgments for those who were there for me during my roughest times.
