Surviving a Snow Storm at Anchor. (Sailing Alaska)

Winter’s Embrace: Anchored in the Alaskan Wilderness

This sailboat, an idyllic floating home, found its resting place amidst the serene and untamed beauty of the Alaskan Wilderness. As the calm and tranquil weather began to wane, the crew prepared for the impending snowstorm, their day commencing early.

Inside their floating haven, the crew braced for the frigid morning. They had adopted the habit of conserving heat during the night, relying on down blankets for warmth. But the morning cold necessitated rekindling the stove, a comforting source of heat, and transforming the boat into a cozy sanctuary.

A gentle snowfall graced the outside world as the crew surveyed their surroundings. The Anchorage’s beauty lay in its vastness, contrasting with the tight quarters of the previous one. With a plethora of room and plenty of anchor chain deployed, the crew felt secure in their new position. Their Anchorage was well-protected from the southeast and east winds, ensuring their safety in the impending storm.

The crew remained vigilant as they monitored the weather forecast for the expected snowstorm. Their preparations were thorough, with every detail attended to. Even when the storm arrived, the snow was more of a serene and picturesque nature rather than a tumultuous tempest.

They ventured out onto the deck, where the snowflakes gently fell, creating a peaceful and mesmerizing winter landscape. The surroundings were tranquil, with mud flats attracting the attention of vocal geese. A dinghy ride and the disposal of cardboard and trash onshore provided an opportunity to enjoy the crisp, snow-covered scenery.

Their dinghy’s outboard motor, a gift from a friend, ran smoothly, making the snowy expedition a delightful adventure. However, their confidence was soon humbled when the outboard engine acted up, a reminder that even the most experienced sailors encounter challenges from time to time.

A lesson in humility learned, they continued with their snowy escapades, observing icicles forming and indulging in a friendly snowball fight. The simple act of burning cardboard and trash on the shore became an act of environmental responsibility, reducing the strain on local waste disposal systems.

As the day progressed, the crew reveled in the less conventional beauty of their Anchorage. While it may not boast the towering Alaskan mountains, the serenity of the landscape captured their hearts. A snowball fight escalated, temporarily driving the camera away, as they celebrated the enchanting winter surroundings.

With gratitude for the support they received and exciting news to share in their next episode, the crew signed off, leaving behind a wintery wilderness and looking forward to their next Alaskan adventure.
